Statistical Process Control charting, simplified using SPC software, is a primary analysis tool of quality improvement. Control Charts were initially developed by Walter Shewhart in the 1920's, so they are sometimes referred to as Shewhart charts. W. Edwards Deming popularized their use in the 1980's, and current applications are found in healthcare and transactional services, as well as manufacturing and chemical processes. Popular control charts include the XBar chart and the Individual X chart for measurement data, and the c, u, nP and P charts for attribute (count) data.

Control charts identify sources of variation in a process, differentiating between process disruptions or shifts (so called special causes, which exceed the statistical control limits), and the expected process variation. Real-time identification of process shifts improves the response mechanism, and prevents tampering with stable processes. Process capability estimates, such as Cpk, DPMO and Sigma Level, can be used to predict how well stable processes meet the customer requirements. SPC is a necessary part of a Six Sigma program to ensure that processes can consistently meet these requirements.
