PCX and JPEG File Exports

To print a chart to either a PCX or JPEG file, select one of those options from the list at left of the Print dialog box . Enter a file name in the text box provided. When you select OK, the PCX / JPEG Export dialog box will appear.

Note: When printed output is sent to a file, the program will store the file in the directory specified in the Output text box in the Directories dialog box. To access this dialog box, select the Directories button from the Preferences dialog box, available from the Options menu. You can override this directory choice by entering a full path name before the file name in the Print dialog box

The PCX file format is used to transfer pictures between both Windows and non-Windows applications. It is supported by many other applications, including the Write word processor and the Paintbrush drawing program that are supplied with Microsoft Windows, and WordPerfect. It is a bitmap format, meaning that the picture is represented by an array of numbers, each number providing the color of one picture element or pixel.

The JPEG format is useful for transfering pictures to Internet web sites, primarily because of its compression abilities. However, due to these compression techniques. the creation of JPEG files is computationally intensive. The 32-bit version can be expected to perform significantly faster than the 16-bit version. The time taken seems to be approximately proportional to the Bitmap Size, and is not affected by the Quality Level setting.

Note: Portions of this software is based in part on the work of the Independent JPEG Group.

Bitmap Size box: Allows you to specify the resolution of the bitmap -- that is, how many pixels are used. The more pixels used, the better the chart will appear. However, if the chart has too many pixels, there may not be enough memory available to create the picture. Two "standard" sizes are provided: 640 x 480 and 1000 x 640. Alternatively, you can specify your own custom size if you wish.

Orientation box: Allows you to specify whether the chart will be tall and narrow (portrait) or short and wide (landscape). For example, if you have requested a bitmap size of 640 x 480 and you select Portrait, the bitmap will be 480 pixels wide and 640 pixels high. Alternatively, if you select Landscape, it will be 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels high.

Page No.: (Detailed Chart only): Since Detailed Charts may require more than one printed page, you must specify which page (by page number) should be printed to the single picture file.

Quality Level: (JPEG format only): This setting defines the trade-off level between compression

ratio and image quality, with 99 being high quality and 1 being highly compressed. The default is 75, per JPEG's recommendation.

Note: The JPEG format uses a "lossy" compression method that deliberately degrades the image in order to achieve its remarkable compression ratios with 24-bit color images. This degradation is barely perceptable on photographs but can result in entire lines and other important aspects of "line-art" style images and charts being lost, particularly at lower Quality levels.

Color box: Select either Use Screen Colors to create a file that closely matches the appearance shown in your screen, or Black on White, which will create a monochrome file.
