Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) with other Applications

Charts may be embedded into Windows applications that support Object Linking and Embedding, which allows users to access the data files used to create the chart by simply double-clicking on the chart in the application. This action "launches" this application, where changes may be made to the appearance or analysis options just as you would normally. When this application is closed, the changes made appear in the embedded object.

Note: If you get an error message indicating that the server application or source file could not be found, then you must re-register the SPC application. (This is usually the result of moving the application after install):

Open the file spcwin.reg (registration entries) in Notepad or another text editor. Find the text "spcwin.exe" and enter the correct path for the spcwin.exe file immediately before the found text. Save the spcwin.reg file

To embed a chart while this application is running

Select the Copy command in the Edit menu from an active chart window. The chart will be copied to the clipboard, so that when you Paste the chart, it will be an OLE embedded object. Of course, the application you are pasting into must support object embedding, or the chart will be pasted as a metafile or bitmap.

To embed a chart while this application is not running

You can also embed a chart into an application that supports object embedding. The method used will depend on the application you’re embedding into. For example, in Microsoft Word you would choose Object from the Insert menu, and from Microsoft Excel you choose Insert Object from the Edit menu. In either case, select SPC Chart from the list of object types.

You will be given the option of using a current data file, or creating a new one. In either case, it must be a data file that you open or create. You will see the normal dialog boxes to accomplish these tasks. Once the data file has been opened, you will immediately be taken to the Chart Options dialog box for chart creation.

Once the chart window has been created (it will be blank for a new file), you can enter data, change analysis options and chart format options like a typical session. However, you will not be able to access certain commands, such as creating other new files or opening other files.

If the application you have embedded into supports OLE v2.0, then changes made will automatically be updated as you make them. If it only supports OLE v1.0, then the changes will become effective when you close this application.

To edit an embedded chart

In order to edit the file from the other application, you will need to have this application and the data file available on your local or network drive. Otherwise, you will only be able to view the chart in the application, and double clicking on the embedded object will produce a warning message from the application.

From the application you have embedded into, double click on the embedded chart. This will launch this application, with the chart as the active window. You will be able to do some commands, such as editing Chart Format Options, and adding free-floating chart annotations, but you must open the data file (when prompted) for others, such as editing Analysis Options, adding Assignable Causes, or editing data. These require the data file, since they either require recalculation (editing data or Analysis Options), or they require someplace to put the new information (Assignable Causes and new data).

If the application you have embedded into supports OLE v2.0, then changes made will automatically be updated as you make them. If it only supports OLE v1.0, then the changes will become effective when you close this application.
