Axis Scaling

The Axis Scaling button in the Chart Format Options dialog box allows you to define the scaling options in some of the chart windows. In general, it is best to let the software set the scaling.

  • Auto Scaling Check Box: Check here for automatic (as opposed to user-defined) scaling on the Y-axis for control charts, scatter diagrams, and Pareto diagrams, and the X-axis for histograms.

  • Y-Axis Scaling: If you do not check the Auto Scaling check box, this set of options will become active. You must enter the low value, the high value, and the number of intervals (= the number of tick marks minus one). If you check in the Rescale box, the program will rescale your entered values if it has to in order to show all of the data.

  • Histogram Scaling: If you do not check the Auto Scaling box, this set of options will become active. You can enter a value for the number of cells in the histogram, the low cell boundary, and the width of each cell. If you check the Rescale box, the program will rescale your entered values if it has to in order to show all of the data. If you do not enter enough information for the program to determine the scaling, it will revert to Autoscaling.

Note: This option is not recommended, since the scaling on histograms is a statistical concern, based on the number of samples, not one involving making the chart look pretty.
