Attaching Gages

A variety of gages can be connected to a serial port of your computer. These ports are also known as the "COM" or "RS-232" ports. Most PCs have two serial ports. They are often used to connect a mouse, modem, or printer to your computer. A PC can have up to four serial ports installed, and they are usually referred to by the names COM1, COM2, COM3, and COM4. You should verify that you have a serial port that is available to be used by the gage and determine what its name is. Some manufacturers label the connectors; many do not and you will have to determine the name from your computer's user manual. If this fails, you may be able to determine it by trial and error from the gage itself.
