Assignable Causes

Assignable Causes are labels that are attached to selected subgroups to provide information about the cause for a process shift occurring at that subgroup. Assignable Causes are stored within each subgroup’s first row in the user-defined column within the data file.

To attach an assignable cause to a subgroup,

  1. Select the subgroup from a chart window with the right mouse button. (You may find it convenient to use the zoom and pan features, or the left and right arrow keys, to home in on the desired subgroup).

  2. From the drop down menu, select Assignable Cause, which opens the Assignable Cause Column dialog box (if an Assignable Cause column has not been previously selected) or the Assignable Cause dialog box .

Selecting an Assignable Cause from the Chart window offers the following options:

  • it may be moved by dragging it to a more convenient location using the left mouse button

  • double clicking on the note opens the Assignable Cause dialog box so that the note can be edited.

  • the right mouse button offers a menu to Remove the Assignable Cause from the chart (it is retained within the data file), or Edit the Assignable Cause, which reopens the Assignable Cause dialog box.
