Linking to External Data Sources

In the last slide, we imported data, which is useful if you don’t plan to add any new data to the Excel file. Linking is the better choice if you will continue to add or edit data in the data source file, and you want to see those changes reflected in your analysis.

When data is linked, the data source will be re-queried each time the chart is opened. You can also use the chart’s right mouse menu Refresh option to re-query the data source.

image\MOUSE.gif In the Supplied Widgets, Inc. folder, select the Linked Excel Data characteristic, then select the Show Chart option from the right mouse menu.

image\MOUSE.gif Use MS Excel to open the linked file (C:\Program Files\spcexplorer\Sample.xls). Edit or add new data to the Width column in Sheet1. Save the changes to the Excel file, then use the Refresh option from the control chart’s right mouse menu to view the changes.
