Defining Processes

The Process Branch image\processdiamond.gif provides the list of processes you want to monitor or analyze. Each Process will contain one or more Characteristics for which data will be recorded.

The software and database provide customization features so the terminology is pertinent to your particular industry. For example, if you work in a production environment, you may prefer to group Characteristics in terms of Part descriptions, rather than Process descriptions. That’s fine. If you choose to do this for all your Characteristics in the database, you can change the branch name from Process to Part, as discussed later in this tutorial.

When a given process is expanded, you can view its associated Characteristics.

image\mouse.gif Expand the Order Processing branch (within the Customer Service folder) to view its Characteristics.

image\mouse.gif Select the Order Processing process. Using the right mouse menu, select the Edit Process option to open the Define Process dialog box.

The General tab is used to set the Process Name, Description, and the Characteristics you'll be measuring in the process. Characteristics may be added to this process using the Add button within this dialog, as well as by a number of other ways we will discuss shortly.

The Note / Image tab is used to make an instruction or graphic file available to users during data entry or analysis. Notes and Images, as well as an unlimited number of document files, may also be assigned to each Characteristic.

image\mouse.gif Select the Note / Image tab and type the Process Note as it appears in the screen shot below. Use the Browse button to find the Slingshot.jpg file in the default directory. Select the OK button to close the dialog box and save the changes.
