Getting Started

Welcome! This tutorial provides an overview of key features, especially with regard to populating your database with Process Characteristics. If you've installed the software, you can follow along in the software using the instructions noted by the mouse symbolimage\mouse.gif. Additional information concerning the contents of any dialog box or window may be found by selecting the context-sensitive Help button image\helpsmall.gif.

image\mouse.gif Open the software by selecting the Sample Database shortcut from your MS Windows Start menu (or desktop, if you selected this option during install). Log in as Bob Jones. Bob has Administrator privileges in the database, so you'll be able to see all the features.

image\mouse.gif If you are already in the application, select the Database item in the Explorer view branch (see below).

image\mouse.gif If you purchased the Real Time interface option, and you’re not seeing the Explorer view, select the Explorer option from the View menu.

image\mouse.gif Use the Properties option in the right mouse menu to verify you have the Sample file open. If not, you can use the Open option from the right mouse menu: Choose Microsoft Access Database, then navigate to the correct folder (the default folder is C:\Program Files\spcexplorer) and select the Sample.mdb file.

Users are logged into the database so that data entry and editing actions are traceable to them. Additional ISO / QS 9000 / CFR traceability features are also provided throughout the software; an optional CFR-compliance feature is also available to further restrict access and document changes to Audit Trails. The User Name (or initials, or any other identification, such as Employee ID number) is selected from the alphanumeric list, which is pre-selected with the last user who logged in from this computer workstation. Optional passwords ensure logon integrity. You can even use barcode readers to enter this information!

The Explorer view (shown below) provides access for offline data entry and analysis, as well as data management. An optional real-time interface provides a Work Set view for real-time data entry and analysis; an optional Web Interface is also available for off-site employees or customers to view selected data and analyses using only a web browser.
